Single Window Initiative
In March 2017, the CBSA implemented the Single Window Initiative (SWI). As your broker, we want to ensure you are aware of the changes coming in 2019, and how they will impact your company. Please see the following program summary, and please reach out to us for further information.
What is Single Window Initiative (SWI)?
SWI is a mechanism that will allow importers and brokers to electronically submit all information required to comply with the government’s import regulations. This includes the CBSA and all participating government agencies (PGA’s).
Prior to the Single Window Initiative, many participating government agencies collected necessary information after release of your goods. With Single window however, all required information will need to be provided prior to release. This means you will likely need to provide your Customs broker with additional information in order to receive your goods.

What products are affected by SWI?
The SWI will impact the import of most commodities in Canada. Here are a few examples of commodities that will be impacted (please note that this list is not exhaustive):

When will SWI come into effect?
As of April 1, 2019, the only release service option for goods regulated by the CFIA, Natural Resources Canada and Transport Canada will be via Single Window.
How will this impact you?
With SWI, it may seem like we, as your broker, are asking you for information that we’ve never asked for before. We are only asking you for the information required to obtain release of your products. It is important that this information be shown on your commercial invoice or Canada Customs invoice in order to allow prompt processing of your shipments.
